Rs discovery 1000 great !!!
I purchased a Radio Shack Discovery 1000 for 30 bucks. It is basically thesame detector as the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV and the Bounty Hunter Pioneer101. These detectors are really good at searching in trash using the tonefeature. I hunted today and used tone and only dug the high tones. Itcherry picked coins out of some really serious trash areas. I have otherbrands that will go deeper but they won't do as good as this one in heavypull tab locations. I like the little thing. It's lightweight and thesounds are crisp and clear. Great beginner unit, or a backup machine, or atrashy cherry picker.Max Depth: 6 inches on US quarter

I bought this unit last week. I have gotten almost 5 days out of a set ofbatteries. This is a GREAT beginners unit or even a time killer for thefamily. I have found the steering wheel out of a tractor. . batteries. nails belt. . buckles. A lot of pop tops and beer caps though reallyno way of sorting them out. I have found around 2 bucks in change but noold coins this area is not rich in history. I have used it in all sorts ofterrain and been pleased with it. Very happy with the price of the unit asfar as performance.Good for money/beginners
I bought this detector thinking it was going to be worth my money, well boyI was wrong. After buying I realized that the settings and everything aretoo simple, you need more information like what it is just not iron orsilver. Anyway I wouldn't recommend this thing to anyone, however I havefound some things with it: and old 1800's swiss army knife and an oldfence, its also very hard to pinpoint. If I were you I would just go and spend the 250 bucks and get the Ace 250instead its a way better detector.
DON T BUY THIS MODEL!

i live in the art museum area of philadelphia, pa. my daughter rescued adog in our neighborhood and now Charlie is mine. looking for something todo while walking Charlie, i thought about metal detectors (md's). oneevening a guy was walking to his front door carrying a md. i asked himabout it and his reply was 'it's been in my closet since the baby was born(apprx 2 yrs ago). it works great. would you like to have it'? i said no(just kidding), brought it home, put 2 9v's in it and i'm soon off anddetecting. the reviews for this model(Discovery 1000)via the web arepositive along with its simplicity and reported effectiveness is why i'mgiving it 3 stars without having used it yet. i'm now looking forward tothe next 100,000+ person event to find what others have left behind becauseI wish i had this md 2 years ago after the 'save africa/aids/food forfree'(or something like that)and 1,000,000 people had visited 3 blks frommy house. WHAT A SCORE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN!!!Radio Shack Discovery 1000
I have had this detector for several years. Easy to use with its automaticbalancing. A $10.00 swap meet special. I have used it in all conditions, mountain soil, playgrounds, lake sand and water and even in salt water -Puget Sound, WA. Found gold and silver rings, and silver coins. If I can'thear the sound I watch the analog meter. I don't use earphones as I oftenhunt in the forest and Bears and Cougars have been sighted.Great
What can one say but that a detector do and preform as wanted I have gottenfrom this machine more than expected. Have I found a wealth of treasuresyes and no. I love the detector and enjoyed using it ? U better believethat I will suggest that a Discovery 1000 be used as 1 & only or as a 2ndback up detector. It Is a great beginner unit. thx'sI have a Radio Shack Discovery 1000 model that was given to me as a Christmas present many years ago new. It has sat in a closet until now when I have gotten the bug to look for 'treasures' (coins, etc.).

I was trying to find a manual for this. I was looking all over the internet and could not find one. Closest I found was someone described where to find a 1100 model which was close in model number, but dials were digital and different.
Thanks to the 'TreasureKidd' for a post I found by doing a Search on 'Discovery 1000'. It was mentioned that the Bounty Hunter IV is a similar make. (I have downloaded this manual and the pictures match what I have other than the model words and the coil.)
Discovery 1100 Metal Detector Review
Hope my terminology is correct - the ring at the bottom closest to the ground is what I am calling the coil.
Question:
The 'coil' I have is a solid piece and has Radio Shack on it. By solid I mean no holes in the coil. Looks like a molded piece of plastic.
1. Is this 'coil' waterproof?
2. If the answer is 'yes', does that mean I can get the machine in the water as long as I keep the 'main box' above water? I was thinking of trying it in really shallow water, but was scared I might ruin it.
Thanks in advance for your time.
